2026 / 2027 Season Club Opening Day

The 2026 -2027 season Club opening was held on Saturday the 12 September 2026. It was a beautiful spring day, and the greens were open for several social games. Before play commenced our Club President, Marty Taylor, offered up a few well-chosen words, followed by our Patron John Girdler adeptly rolling up the first bowl of the season. The roll-up games were followed by an afternoon tea.  The bar was naturally open for those who wanted to partake in a beer or wine, and a raffle was available with three winners of three choice meat trays from Beckenham Butchery.

Brian (Davo) Davison

It is with sadness that we advise members that Brian Davison passed away on the 23 August 2026 aged 90 years.  He had been unwell the previous week. Affectionally known as Davo, Brian was a life member and a Past President of the club. He won club tittles in the pairs, triples and fours, and was President of the Club in 1994 / 1995. Brian had been a life member of our club since 2009.  He had been heavily involved with BBC for many years but, due to deteriorating health, he had not been to the club over the last 2 – 3 years.

Trevor's Coaching Corner

Coaching Saturday 26 September 2026 at 1 pm

Coaching will be given this coming Saturday at 1 pm to give guidance to new members or anyone else interested in improving their game.

We all have something that doesn't quite go right when playing so this is your opportunity to get the issue/s remedied.

Following up on Bowls Canterbury's request it will also be an opportunity to start to remedy any dumping issues.

Size is so important when choosing bowls

The size of your lawn bowls is one of the most important decisions you'll make. A bowl that's too large can be difficult to grip comfortably, while one that's too small may affect your consistency and confidence. The best way to find your ideal size is to hold and try a few different bowls before making your decision.

As a general guide agrees Trevor is that "the most critical option when choosing bowls is bowl size. Arguably it is more important than all the other options combined. Handling comfort is the main consideration in choosing the size of a bowl. Any variation from the measured size should err on the side of being slightly small than being too large. In most instances, bowls that are too large cause greater handling difficulty than bowls that are smaller than the measured size."

"Bowlers can estimate a suitable bowl size by encircling a bowl, so that the tips of middle fingers and thumbs approximately touch. A gripped bowl should not fall out of the hand when inverted. The grip should be secure and comfortable."

Selecting a bowl that suits you ...

If you're buying a new set of lawn bowls focus on these four things:

  • Choose a bowl that feels comfortable in your hand.
  • Select a model suited to the greens you play on most.
  • Understand the bowl's bias and how it affects your line.
  • Ask an expert if you're unsure— companies like Taylor, Aero, Henselite, Drakes Pride and Greenmaster are always happy to help.

Dumping

"Let's talk about 'dumping', says Trevor, "There is no official ruling on people dumping their bowls being banned from playing at Beckenham, but there is potential to damage the Greens. If you are a dumper, it is OK, but it recommended that you get some coaching. We recognise that sometimes your stance is tall, because for example, of a disability. The other alternative is to progress to a bowling arm."

Practice

"It is important to have a structured practice regime", says Trevor. "Motivation will get you started, but only good habits will keep you going.
We have good coaches at the club."

“Roll ups” are not good practice – as all you are doing is practising your bad habits.”
"Suggested practice routines are:

  • Jack delivery – short, medium or long lengths
  • Drawing to a displaced jack – both forehand and backhand
  • Drawing around/under bowls
  • One metre through shots
  • Draw to ditch
  • Run shots
  • Drives"

A Selector's Prayer

Blessed are they who can play sport
Blessed are they who can still be taught
Blessed are they who accept with grace
To play in any selected place.
