President's Cup Winners - Saturday 19 September 2026

The President's Cup was played between interested playing Club members on Saturday 19 September starting at 11 am. As a drawn tournament of four players, teams played three games of 10 ends each, it is fun to see who would win this season's cup.

The team that ran out the eventual winners with all three of their games won, was made up of Viv Freeth - Skip, Rick Helliwell - 3rd, Norma Miller, 2nd and Clint McInnes - Lead.

There is a $2.00 entry fee with prizes being awarded each week. To enter tick your name on the club notice board inside the front door of the Club no later than Friday evening prior to any event.

The Jocular Stirrer's Award

The Club's Jocular Stirrer's Award can be presented by any holder of the award, at any time after a week. It can be awarded to any Club member who fits the bill for being a general 'jocular stirrer' over the ensuing period.  The award was recently presented to

Kirsten Simpson

by John Collins who was the previous holder; both for jocular comments of an unspecified kind. Watch out because you could be selected and have your photo taken for posterity to appear on this site.

Bragging Rights

Based on input from members, every week there is good banter over games played by club members, along with those leading the winning of after match raffles, and in recognising volunteer activity.

The most touchers

John Collins recently went away and competed in two roll-up games at the top of the South Island. He is now skiting that he had 5 touchers and that he won handsomely in both games he played. Let's see how good you are this season John, as the Club is now expecting grand things from you with Kevin Jones keenly watching on.

Humour makes the world go round

Someone once said that humour makes the world go round .... and Beckenham Bowling Club members have their fair share that makes life with the Club very enjoyable.

The Cheshire cat named Stu Clarke

A Cheshire Cat named Stu Clarke

"We are unsure what they put in the wine at the Beckenham Bowling Club but judging by the effect on this chap it was certainly making him happy. He is now nic named 'The Cheshire Cat' ... just like the cat that got the cream."

"On reflection, however, we are unsure whether it was the wine that was having an effect, or whether it was that he just wanted to show off a new set of dentures that he possibly got with his new set of bowls."

If you see him on the green, give him a stroke then ask to see his pearly white 'nashers,' so you can judge as to whether it is wine or his dentures that makes him grin like a Cheshire cat?

A poem called ' If '...

If you can always roll the jack,
right at your skipper's feet,

If you can always draw the shot,
the one that must be beat.

When asked to play a 'yard on'
do you judge it to perfection?

And when you're called to drive,
can you always make correction?

If you can come up smiling
when the other bloke,

Puts your good shot out of play
and treats it as a joke.

If you're the one who saves the day,
I'll say to you my son,

"You're a bloody hero mate,
what's more you're the only one!"

A true story from West Australia that proves that our Aussie friends are on to it?

The story goes that a player in a team of mixed fours, that the team's third collapsed on the green just as the skip was about to let go of his bowl. The others called out for him to stop, but he simply took a look and responded, "It's OK, I can draw around her!" The claim is that the third heard this and it was the thing which gave her the will to survive her heart attack.

Recognising our valued volunteer members

We have a number of over 80-year-old veteran members in our Club. Many have given the Beckenham Bowling Club valuable service as playing members and volunteers over the years. We recognise them again here, and thank them for their loyalty, dedication, and service.

This month's featured volunteer member is - Ken Adams
