December Upshot

The First Week of 2010

After Jan Khan’s win in the singles it looked like we may have had a second finalist with Verna Veint, Adele Greenfield, Maureen Doherty and Marg Bruhns just going down in the Semi finals - well done & bad luck. Congratulations to Jan on also picking up the consistancy award.

This weekend saw our Club Mixed Pairs played with a field of twenty teams taking part. Congratulations to Rosemary Finch & John Drake taking the title from Janet Hern & Jimmy Bell.

The Centre Junior Singles had a very low entry from our club due to clashes with other events which was dissapointing. We did manage a 100% record though with Martin Abel, Louie Cooper & CJ Hargave making post section - go well.

New Zealand Singles Winner

Huge congratulations to Jan Khan on picking up her first NZ Singles title in such a convincing manner, the Club is proud of you.

The Club has been well represented with Maureen Doherty & Marg Bruhns in the last 8 of the pairs and Maureen, Verna Veint, Mike Abel all doing well in the singles

Awards, Win and Fun

The last week has seen the club presented with our two awards won back at the end of September. Cushla McGillivray, Board member of Bowls New Zealand presented Barry Chapman with the Don Manson Memorial Award for Administrator of the year followed by the Tower Club of the Year presentation to Past President John Girdler. With 80 members present the night was a great celebration enjoyed by all. We have some photos coming of the occasion.

To add to this our division one Three Fours won two of the three games against their nearest rivals Burnside on Saturday to take out this premier title. It is good to see the men can get into the action alongside our women’s past successes. Our Junior Women’s Inter Club Triple lost the final of this competition this week.

This week also saw the final night of our pre Christmas social bowls (Crack a Jack) which saw over 100 non bowlers on the green each night having a huge amount of fun and enjoyment, We even had three great nights weather wise. We take a well earned break over the holiday period to start again on Wed 27 January where it looks like even more players will be taking part. If you are interested please contact Barry for all the details.

A Good Weekend

Beckenham division two teams in both the women and men’s sections came through as winners of their respective sections. The women’s section only dropped one game but the men had to have everything going for them by winning all three games and Belfast lossing all three. Our singles beat Belfast so then it came down to the remaining games and with a comfortable win in the pairs it was left to the fours who finished 17 -17 going into the final end and coming out with a one point win with both the other games involving Belfast going our way.

Both teams will play again on Sunday 29 November.

Yesterday saw Beckenham pick up the Bowls Canterbury Centre Fours title. A four comprising Verna Veint, Margaret Bruhns, Maureen Doherty and Bev Davey achieved a one point victory over Bev Morel’s Elmwood four.

Semi finalists were both Beckenham teams in Jan Khan, Julie Dalley, Adele Greenfield & CJ Hargrave along with Maureen Sullivan, Linda Boyd, Rosemary Finch & Gill Abel.

In the Men’s competition Brian Eatwell’s four of Grant Templeton, Colin Doran & Mike Abel made the last eight.
