The season has ended

What a busy end to the season. A full two greens for the last half day fours on the Friday and then the closing day on the Saturday. What a great turn out, around 70 members, even though the weather let us down. It looks as though the format was a winner this year. Congratulations to all the prize winners.

The week earlier we had a great response to the Executive “Thank You” evening. Something new but very well recieved. We hope we have everyone offering to assist around the club in the coming season, your assistance is appreciated.

With outdoor finished we move inside with our winter bowls, a great way to fill in a winters afternoon with some bowls and friendship.

This weekend we had a first when the club hosted St Peter’s Indoor Bowls Club for their tournament, 18 teams took part, once again the weather was not great but a lot of fun was had with a number of our outdoor players trying the small version of the game for the first time.

Make sure you are present on Saturday 19 April to celebrate the club successes for the season and of course have some fun, food and bowls.

The afternoon starts at 1.00pm followed on by food, presentations and entertainment. Please tick your name if you wish to play or mark with a “X” if you will only be attending the presentations. If you could do this as soon as possible so we can arrange catering.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Beckenham Aussie Pairs

A successful weekend, with over 64 players involved in an enjoyable two days of bowls at Beckenham.

The tournament came down to the final game of the second day, with Heemi’s team facing up against Jim De Malmanche’s, a win by either team putting them in the top spot. Heemi took the lead in the early parts of the game, but Jim’s pair consisting of himself and David Milne were too strong in the end, winning 15-9 after numerous killed ends.

The favourites for the tournament, Mike and Martin Abel, started the first day well, with 3 wins and 1 loss. But due to the poor form of Gillian Abel in the kitchen, were unable to continue their run into the second day.A huge thanks goes out to Taylor Preston, without whom the tournament could not have been run.

This weekend sees Karin Ware, Maureen Doherty and Vicky “The Champ” Sheard back in action, searching for the Champion of Champions Womens Triples Title.

The first game will be against Ashburton MSA at 9am on Saturday, 5th April, at Hornby WMC; followed by two more games on the first day, given that they win. The finals will be hosted at Papanui Club on Sunday, 6th April.

After their second place finish in the Fours last weekend, I’m sure these ladies will be bringing us home a Centre Title.

Also this weekend, we have the Aussie Pairs at Beckenham. The combination of Martin and Mike Abel looking a sure winner, with Gillian Abel being involved with making the players’ lunch - there are many tricks that can be picked up living in South Africa during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
