Although the women weren’t able to pull off the win in the final of the Champion of Champions Fours, they did very well to get there, with every member of the team contributing to their success.

The final was always going to be a very tough game against the women from Elmwood. After 13 ends Beckenham had fought back to make it 11-12 down, but then dropped a crucial 5 on the 14th end to make it 11-17 to Elmwood. The 5 proved to be the final blow with the final score 21-12 to Elmwood.

The men started off their day on Saturday very well, quickly leaping ahead with a 5 in the 3rd end. Sydenham weren’t able to close the gap and our men came on strong again at the end for an 18-11 win. John Girdler was feeling so bad for the young men from Sydenham that he even gave away a few shots via some weighted touchers.

In their second game against Kaiapoi WMC they continued the form they showed in the first game, however on the day the Kaiapoi team played better, knocking our men out with a final score of 19-7.

Well done to both teams, and thank you very much to all those that came to support our teams.

This Saturday, 29th March, we have eight of our members participating in the Champion of Champions Fours centre competition.Representing the women - Karin Ware, Maureen Doherty, Vicky “The Champ” Sheard and Alice Tripney.

And representing the men - John Girdler, Brian Davison, Roy Beer and Alan Hawes.

The women have been drawn to play at Bowls Papanui, with their first game at 9am against Cashmere; and the men are at Burnside against Sydenham, also at 9am.

The Champion of Champions is a knock out event, so be sure to get there early and cheer our champions on.

Best of luck to both teams.

This weekend within minutes of one another our club produced two Bowls Canterbury title holders. Both Vicky Sheard and Mike Abel took out their respective Junior Singles titles. Congratulations to you both.

But wait there is more. In the past week a team of Brian Davison, Ray Needham, Frank Tinning, Ken Sheard won the Mid Week Friendly Fours. Following this up with Brian and Ray finishing runner up in the Secretary / Treasurers tournament run by Bowls Canterbury.

Another runner up was achieved by a composite team including Margaret Bruhns, Maureen Sullivan and Rosemary Finch in the Pegasus Tournament.

Then there was another win with Margaret Bruhns and Linda Boyd taking out the Bowls Canterbury Open Pairs

Congratulations to all.

Crack a Jack

With the web site up and running now is the chance to spread the word at what a great success our 12 week series of Crack a Jack Bowls has been.

Over 120 new players to the game took part. Over 480 prizes given out and countless sausages cooked, plus a huge amount of fun had by all. Everyone was asking “when are you starting again”. We had all ages from school children to those in the eighties.

To cap it off our President signed up seven new members for next season on our last night, plus there are a few others swinging.

A big thank you to all who assisted in the success of this event this season.

Welcome…

Yes, we’re finally up and running. Welcome to the new Beckenham Bowling Club Website.

The website will continue to undergo changes and improvements for the next couple weeks, until it is in a state that I’m happy with. Pages still to come are a Programme page, and a Sponsors page.

If anyone has ideas for the website, they can talk to Barry Chapman or myself.
